Mafia II is the follow-up published in 2002, Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven by Illusion Softworks. The second part corresponds to the same team, which since 2008 is known under a different name (2K Czech Republic). Besides the titles tell of the infamous Italian criminal group, the company is known, inter alia, Hidden & Dangerous and Vietcong.
Although Mafia II is a continuation, are a completely separate story. This does not mean that an extensive plot predecessor was forgotten - the talon is full of references and tidbits, easy to read for the fans (including the testimony of Tommy Angelo displayed during charging of the mission). However, changing the main characters, time and place of action. You play because the character of Vito Scalettiego, when he finishes his military service and the winter of 1945 he returned to the house - the monumental Empire Bay (10 square miles), which is in fact an adaptation of New York City virtual (mapped in a rather loose way, along with several characteristic structures, such as the Empire State Building or Brooklyn Bridge.) The metropolis is composed of several different neighborhoods (eg, Chinatown, Millville, industrial, port Oysterbay and Southport, the land of the rich and Highbrook Kingstone), among which the most important for this story are of course Little Italy (Little Italy). Vito, along with his friend Joe Barbaro, trying to find themselves back in this reality. However, do not intend to hire in the docks as a cheap labor force. Waiting for them because "career" in the criminal world, in the ranks of one of the local mafia families.
Changing the period during which the action happens, it means new, even more cruel reality and a slightly different style (also faster cars). The second edition of its predecessor model series offers a fairly linear gameplay. To play a total of fifteen chapters, and their completion on normal difficulty should take between 10 to 15 hours. Same tasks are fortunately very diverse, offering a spectacular battles with members of competing Mafia families, drive cars, which require someone to follow, or flee the police, and even challenges involving the need to remain in hiding. All this stapled been an interesting theme in the main, full of twists, tension, and the characteristic black humor.
Besides, in the city is waiting for us a lot of interest, both legal and illegal. So we can steal vehicles, (for quickly by breaking windows, or subtly, by hacking), choosing from dozens of models, modeled on real-life brands, and then improve and modify them in the workshop. Within the Empire Bay there are numerous shops where you can buy new clothes (sometimes useful when the police chasing us), food or weapons.
The game world notes the passing of time - in terms of both day and night cycle and the changing seasons - but this is somewhat dependent on the plot (eg, some chapters are played in winter and some summer). Range of new skills gained as our ward who can fight with fists with more blows, hide behind curtains and jump over fences.
Mafia II was taken on a new graphics engine. With his help - as in the first part - well first of all the faces mapped characters, their facial expressions (for which he is responsible for more than 30 facial muscles), and animation. This makes large quantities presented in the cutscenes, the graphics engine implemented, seem almost directed films with live actors.
